Amanda and Jonathan: ''we knew pretty early on that our relationship was the real deal''

Amanda and Jonathan were married June 4th, 2017. Jdate is so happy to have played a role in their love story, and wishes them every happiness. Mazel tov!

Tell us all about your story! The more details the better!

The meeting: Jonathan and I met on Jdate. Despite the fact that we both went to college in Columbus, we never met during our university years. A few months after graduation in 2013, I was persuaded to join Jdate. I found Jonathan’s profile and thought he was really cute and funny. After going back and forth for a few days, I finally decided to message him with the help of my best friend (and Maid of Honor) Jacqlyn.

The first date: Jonathan and I exchanged messages on Jdate for a couple of weeks before moving to text and phone conversations. After about a month of conversation, Jonathan asked me out on a date. On October 5th, 2013 Jonathan drove down to Cincinnati for our first date, he even missed an OSU Football game! We both showed up at Red Robin wearing my favorite color, pink!

Roughly 3 weeks later, on November 1st Jonathan officially asked me to be his girlfriend. He didn’t know it then, but that 25 cent ring out of the gumball machine at Steak n Shake at midnight wouldn’t be the last ring he bought me.

The proposal: I now know that Jonathan had been working with Jacqlyn to pick out a ring and plan the proposal. Jonathan’s grandfather, Jack Cohen, was a jeweler, so Jonathan decided to get the ring at a jeweler who knew his grandfather. Jonathan made the drive to Cincinnati on September 3rd, 2015 and worked with Jester Jewelers to find my perfect ring. Jonathan finally decided to propose on Erev Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is a time of renewal and reflection, so a proposal would be particularly appropriate.

On September 13th, 2015 Jonathan’s parents hosted a dinner for my parents, my aunt, Jonathan’s uncle, Oma z’l, Opa z’l (Grandma and Grandpa in German), Jonathan, and myself. Opa was the boss at all family dinners, yet after the blessing over the bread, Jonathan asked if he could say a few words. He began a short speech about how he loved me and never wanted to go without my love. Jonathan then pulled the ring box out of the china cabinet behind him and got down on his knee and asked me to marry him! Of course I said YES!

Once the ring was on my finger, Opa lead everyone in singing Siman Tov U’mazal Tov, a traditional Jewish wedding song that wishes good luck to the happy couple. It was a perfect moment, with my perfect person, at the perfect time, and with a perfect ring.

The wedding: Jonathan and I were married in Columbus, Ohio on June 4th, 2017. We had the ceremony at Congregation Tifereth Israel, the beautiful synagogue where Jonathan grew up. Our respective childhood Rabbis officiated our ceremony.

We filled the day with special, sentimental touches. Opa’s tallit served as our chuppah, we each used the wedding band from our grandpas for the ceremony, I had flowers and brooches from my grandmas in my bouquet. Our ketubah was hand painted by a dear family friend.

Our regal wedding day continued with a reception at the Athletic Club of Columbus, surrounded by crystals, candles, and purple accents. I could not have envisioned a better day to commit myself to my bashert. Now: Jonathan and I live in Columbus, Ohio with two wonderful cats, Oakley and Jack. I am the Marketing Coordinator for a Reform temple in Columbus and Jonathan works for his family’s business. We have had a fantastic first year of marriage and are looking forward to many more!

When did you know it was true love?

Jonathan and I knew pretty early on that our relationship was the real deal. Jonathan’s mom insists that she knew from the moment she met me that I would marry her son. We both have amazing relationships with both families and our parents even share a wedding anniversary date of May 29th!

I think Jonathan and I knew that we would end up making a lifelong commitment to each other about 8 months in to our relationship.
